Terms / Course Requirements

  • As a pre-requisite to taking the Basic Rider Course, students should be able to ride and balance a bicycle.

  • To Graduate: Students must attend all portions of the classroom and riding sessions to graduate.  Due to RMV regulations and liability insurance restrictions, you cannot participate in the course if you miss any portion of the course.  Students must be on time for all class components (classroom and riding sessions) or they will dismissed and forfeit their tuition.  To graduate, students must also pass a multiple-choice written exam and a riding skills evaluation.

  • To Receive your License: Students who graduate (as described above) will receive a Certificate of Motorcycle Rider Education Training.  Graduates are exempt from the Registry of Motor Vehicles road test.  In order to receive the road test waiver, students must supply a photocopy of their learner's permit at the first class session.  Permits must not expire within two weeks after course completion. 

  • The Basic and Experienced Rider Courses involve the risk of personal injury and the training can be physically and mentally demanding.  Also, the course is conducted in a group format with a ratio of 6 students per Rider Coach.  If students are not able to keep up with the pace of the course, or if they pose a hazard to themselves or others, they may be dismissed from the course.  If a student is dismissed, they will not receive a tuition refund.

  • Student motorcycles to be used in the Experienced RiderCourse must pass a pre-ride inspection. 

  • Cancellation / Reschedule Policy: If you need to cancel or reschedule a class, follow the instructions below.

Cancellation Policy: To receive a refund, a request must be sent in writing (US Mail, e-mail - see our "Contact Us" link) and received by Streetwise Cycle School more than 10 days prior to the start of the course. All cancellations that are made more than 10 days prior to the start of the course will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. No refunds will be made to students who cancel with less than 10 days written notice, are late to class, dismissed, voluntarily leave, do not pass a written or riding evaluation, have previously rescheduled, or miss a segment of either course.

No cancellations allowed with less than 10 days notice.  You can re-schedule to another date in the same calendar year (subject to space availability).  Refer to the reschedule fees below.

Reschedule Policy: Students may reschedule to another class within the calendar year one time, space permitting. All reschedule requests must be sent to Streetwise Cycle School in writing (US Mail, e-mail - see our "Contact Us" link).  All reschedule requests that are received more than 7 days prior to the start of the course will be charged a $25 reschedule fee. All reschedule requests that are received between 7 and 2 days prior to the start of the course will be charged a $100 reschedule fee.  There will be no rescheduling of a class within 48 hours of the start of the course.

within 48 hours of the start of the course This is considered a cancellation.  No refund is available.  Full tuition is forfeited. 

If we experience severe weather (i.e. extremely high winds, lightning, snow, or ice), the class may need to be cancelled.  Also, there may be occasions where the site becomes unavailable due to  things such as unexpected repairs.  If a course is cancelled for these types of things, tuition will be fully refunded.

 

  • Refunds will not be given:

    • If you fail to attend any portion of your scheduled class.

    • If you arrive late and are not allowed to participate.

    • If you cancel with less than 10 days notice.

    • If you reschedule two times in a calendar year.

    • If you do not pass the written or riding skills evaluations.

    • If you are dismissed.

    • If you leave voluntarily.

    • Please remember that the course runs in the rain.

    Refunds will be given:

    • If we cancel class due to severe weather conditions or if the site is not available due to unforeseen problems.  If Streetwise Cycle School cancels class, we will provide a full refund of tuition.

     

    Lost BRC / ERC cards and certificates:  You will be charged $40 additional to re-issue lost BRC or ERC cards or certificates.  BRC / ERC cards will not be replaced if they are 5 or more years old.

     

  • Students may retake the riding skill evaluation only once for any one class. Students who must return to the training site for their second riding skill evaluation must do so within fourteen (14) days of the class completion date on a space available basis.  All such retakes will be subject to a $40 charge.

  • Students under 18 who want to obtain a motorcycle license as a result of graduation, must:           

    a.     Have a Driver Education Certificate issued by the RMV.

    b.     Have held your Cass D or M permit for a minimum of 6 months.

     

  • You must call this office prior to registering if:

    • Your inseam is less than 26" or you are less than 62" tall

    • You have a physical, medical, or learning disability

    • Your primary language is not English

All students must bring to class:

  • A photocopy of the original motorcycle learner's permit

  • Students under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver form and bring it to the first class.

  • Pen or pencil for taking notes

  • NOTE: Please arrive on time, or even 15 minutes early.  We will begin promptly at the scheduled times.  Under RMV regulations, you must be on time or you will not be allowed to participate in the BRC and you will forfeit your tuition.

All students must bring to practice:

  • DOT-approved helmet (If you do not own a helmet, you can borrow one from us)

  • Eye protection (eyeglasses, sunglasses, face shield, or goggles)

  • Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear (your footwear must cover your ankles)

  • Full-fingered gloves

  • Long sleeve shirt or jacket

  • Long pants (jeans without flared bottoms and without holes in them would be fine)

  • Rain gear (course runs rain or shine)

  • Sun block, as needed

  • Snacks, lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages

  • NOTE: Under RMV regulations, you must be on time and you must wear the proper riding gear described above, or you will not be allowed to ride and you will forfeit your tuition.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Basic Rider Course

  • Tuition: $265.

  • Designed for the student with little or no riding experience.

  • Motorcycles (250cc or less) are provided at no additional charge.

  • Helmets are available for free to students who do not have their own.

  • 15 hour course (5 hours classroom, 10 hours riding).

  • Pass the course, get your motorcycle license without the need for an RMV road test.

  • Receive 10% limited discount on motorcycle insurance for life.

  • Get Motorcycle Manufacturers' Incentives!  Many motorcycle manufacturers offer tuition reimbursement or other incentives for students who successfully complete a RiderCourse.  Check with you local dealer for more information on incentive programs.

  • Limited Space Maneuvering

  • Cornering

  • Avoiding Hazards

STUDENTS MUST ATTEND ALL CLASSROOM AND PRACTICE SESSIONS AND PASS THE REQUIRED EVALUATIONS TO GRADUATE FROM THIS COURSE AND RECEIVE A COURSE COMPLETION CARD.

 

 

Refresher Course

  • Tuition: $125

  • Designed for students who have passed the Basic Rider Course, but have not had an opportunity to ride enough to be confident.  This is an opportunity to take the Basic Rider Course again for less than 1/2 price.  Note: You must provide a photocopy of your Basic Rider Course completion card and your permit or license at beginning of course.

  • Motorcycles (250cc or less) are provided at no additional charge.

  • Helmets are available for free to students who do not have their own.

  • 10 or 15 hour course (5 hours classroom, 10 hours riding).  You can either participate in the classroom and the riding instruction or just the riding instruction.  The topics covered are the same as the Basic Rider Course described above.

 

Experienced Rider Course (ERC)  
  • Tuition: $125.

  • Designed for motorcyclists who have at least one year and 1,000 miles of riding experience.

  • Students use their own motorcycles which are properly insured, registered, and inspected.

  • Motorcycles must pass the instructor’s pre-ride safety check.   Please respect our neighbors' right to peace and quiet.  Only motorcycles equipped with legal mufflers can be used for the ERC.  (No straight pipes, please.  Street legal aftermarket exhausts are OK).

  • 6 hour course.

  • Pass the course, get your motorcycle license without the need for an RMV road test.

  • Receive 10% limited discount on motorcycle insurance for life.

  • Get Motorcycle Manufacturers' Incentives!  Many motorcycle manufacturers offer tuition reimbursement or other incentives for students who successfully complete a RiderCourse.  Check with you local dealer for more information on incentive programs.
